Animalón by the Sea

Tijuana-born chef Javier Plascencia made a name for himself with six restaurants across the Baja Peninsula.  His latest venture opened this past spring called Animalón by the Sea.  Animalón features fine dining with a tasting menu on a two-story, 49-foot luxury boat departing from the Cabo San Lucas Marina to the Arch. Plascencia translated his award-winning menu from Animalón in Baja’s wine country for the high seas, with a five-course meal of local ingredients and seafood such as kampachi and totoaba. Chef Oscar Torres, an LA native, is at the kitchen’s helm and the seasonal menu. The boat has a maximum capacity of 40 diners and departs five days a week at 6 p.m..

Puerto Raiz – Semillón

Another creation by chef Javier Plascencia that opened recently was Puerto Raiz, a 13-acre farm with trees, gardens, orchards, and animals.  Puerto Raiz is home to Javiers newest restaurant, Semillón.   The concept is similar to Plascencia’s restaurant Jazamango in Todos Santos, where 60 to 70 percent of the food is sourced from the garden of Puerto Raiz (meaning “port of roots”).  Semillón is open for breakfast/brunch.  I have been several times for the mouthwatering delicious french toast and egg sandwich.

El Huerto

An open-air restaurant, El Huerto, is another farm-to-table dining experience that opened at the end of 2020.  It is located just 5 minutes from Esperanza near downtown Cabo San Lucas and serves a straightforward menu serving healthy, organic, sustainable dishes. You must try the fried green beans. Yum!

Although a small farm, it was well planned with dozens of fruits, vegetables and herbs growing.  Visitors are encouraged to explore the farm, relax in a hammock or sit with friends around a firepit observing the lit-up Cabo sky.

On Saturday mornings, El Huerto hosts an outdoor farmer’s market with vendors selling organic fruits and veggies, artisans with unique handicrafts from different parts of Mexico, and other local boutique organizations supporting fair trade and the local community. 

Reservations are highly recommended, with breakfast open from Tuesday through Sunday from 7:00 am to 1:00 pm and dinner from 5:30 pm to 10:00 pm.
